Lake Orta
Orta and the island of San Giulio
The Lake Orta area offers many places to visit and admire.
Starting from Mount Mottarone, which separates it from Lake Maggiore. For sports lovers, it can be crossed by bike.
Orta San Giulio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, 22km from Arona, is not to be missed. Its name is due to the evangelist sent to the area to deal with the Arian heretics. In the village there are workshops, stores and restaurants. The lake scenery is even more suggestive at sunset. Across the paved streets, tourists can reach the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, in Baroque style.
Not far from Villa Crespi, tourists can take a lakeside path, or they can reach the Sacro Monte to visit the twenty chapels, built on a wooded promontory. The Sacro Monte is a UNESCO heritage site and the chapels narrate the life of St. Francis of Assisi.
The island of San Giulio is also noteworthy. It can be reached from Orta San Giulio, the landing stage is located in Piazza Motta. A moment of serenity for tourists, through the "path of silence and meditation", up to the roman basilica. Legend has it that the island, before the arrival of San Giulio, was haunted by monsters. The island is also home to a female monastery.
Legro, "the painted village", is 22km away from Arona. The town is known for its frescos, which are more than 60. One of the most famous ones represents the poster for the movie "Riso Amaro".
